INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING FALCONS!
Up Coming Events and Fundraisers
***Message From Mr. Green***
We hope you are enjoying the last few days of summer. We wish more than anything that we were working with all of you in band camp and could see you all in person! Even though we will not be meeting in person for a little while longer, we are committed to continuing to provide a quality band program at Independence High School.
Given the uniqueness of our circumstances, please go ahead and check out the information below:
Overall Philosophy: We intend to teach our classes and provide students with meaningful content that they will enjoy to the best of our abilities. We will also be teaching with the hope that we will be going back to in-person teaching at some point in this academic year. Our lessons will be set up to prepare our students to be the best musicians/performers possible when we are allowed to meet again.
Concert Bands: All of our brass, woodwind, and percussion students will be in either 1st period Wind Symphony with Mr. Green or 2nd period Symphonic Band with Mr. Rodriguez. Because we have not been able to do traditional auditions, we have pre-selected which students will be in which class to start with; we did this based upon A. Previous experience in the IHS program, B. Previous performance in the IHS program (grades, SmartMusic, etc.) and C. Talking to previous band directors (in the case of freshmen). We completely recognize that there might be returners and incoming freshmen that might be ready to play in the Wind Symphony that we put in Symphonic Band. We have created a way for you to move up by performing a couple of short video assignments and emailing them to us; you can find those instructions here: Challenge Assignment For First Semester
We have attached a PDF of our initial rosters at the bottom. If you think there is an error or you have a question, please let me know.
Color Guard: Similar to the concert bands, the color guards have been separated into 1st period and 2nd period. For more details or potential switches, please email Mr. Green (David_Green@kernhigh.org) and Ms. Liz (Elizabeth_Dirzo@kernhigh.org)
Indoor Percussion/Drumline: We will continue to offer the indoor percussion program at Independence that will meet in 8th period. Mr. Rodriguez is working on an exciting curriculum that will allow you to keep working on your skills as we prepare for a competitive PPAACC season starting in January. Because we do not have a “normal” marching band this year, wind players who often join at the semester are encouraged to take percussion the first semester in order to keep their skills up. More details are to be announced.
Jazz Band: Jazz band tryouts will happen virtually and will be decided within the first two weeks of school. I will be following up with more information.
Final Thoughts: Despite the crazy circumstances, we are happy to get back to work and looking forward to teaching music again. We hope you will have some grace with us as we navigate these crazy times in regards to distance learning, and we hope you’ll stick it out. Independence Music has a long history of offering our students experiences that are high quality and meaningful. We are fully committed to continuing that.
We’ll see you soon!
